London has thousands of hotels and choosing the "right" one can be overwhelming. Here
are some general suggestions:
- Stay in as central a location as possible. That way, your day of sightseeing won't always start and end with a nasty
commute.
- But if you have an early morning flight out of Heathrow, consider staying at the airport the night before.
- Hotel standards are different in the UK and the US. Americans should discount star ratings of London hotels,
especially among budget and mid-priced properties. A 3-star London property may be more like a 2-star hotel back home, although
this is not always the case.
- London is expensive (no surprise), so prepare for sticker shock if you are not used to hotel prices in major world cities.
Here are a few central London hotels that we've had the chance to evaluate:

The Holiday Inn Mayfair
This is a nice, modern, big city Holiday Inn in a prime location—just a block north
of Green Park Underground station, and near the famous (and expensive) Ritz.
If your wallet can't quite deal with the 4 and 5 star offerings, but you still want to stay in central Mayfair, this is a
good option.

Need to stay at Heathrow Airport?
The Sofitel London Heathrow is connected directly to the new Terminal 5. Most convenient for early morning or late arriving
flights. No airport shuttle bus required...just stroll down the connecting corridor, take the elevator/lift, and you're in
the terminal.
This large hotel is new, modern, and quiet (even though it's literally next to the airport). The property
has several good restaurant and bar options on-site.
